Last month Richard Ayre and friends completed the 10K Stockton River Rat Race in honour of Daniel Howell, who has cystinosis. In doing so they raised over £500, here’s a few words from Richard:
“I originally starting fund raising for the Cystinosis Foundation in 2012, when a good friends son was diagnosed with Cystinosis, once we found out we were compelled to do something to try and help, so the fund raising began. In May 2012 we ‘aka the Hairy Hikers’, Myself, Scott Clarkson and Jonathan Garrett took up the challenge of completing the Lyke Wake Walk in less than 24hrs, which was very gruelling, but once we all reached the finish line the achievement was over whelming. So what next…. well I asked the Hairy Hikers to part take in the 2012 Rat Race, unfortunately the timings were not good, so I persuaded Simon Nozedar to come and get soaked doing the river rat race, it was fantastic, and we raised over £500.00. It was that good I have done it again this year, but managed to con/encourage another 4 , including my wife Sonia, Lisa, Ste, Jill and Simon (to do it again!) and we have so far raised another £500 in aid of the Cystinosis Foundation UK”
What is the Stockton River Rat Race?
The River Rat Race, is a 10km course with a twist. We swam, waded up the white water rapids, crawled, climbed, jumped, splashed, and ran around an urban obstacle course which finished with us walking the plank and jumping from a replica of the HMS Endeavour 20ft high into the River Tees. What can I say, it was brilliant, poor Jill was the only person not to finish due to a pulled hamstring whilst descending one of the 3 hills!!! but a very brave effort.
We’d like to thank everyone who took part in the event and all those that donated to their fundraising page.
