A group of six brave and energetic people will head off from Catherine De Barnes, near Solihull on 2nd July at the start of a 100 mile walk, which will end on 4th July at Preston, Hertfordshire.
These friends and family members of sisters Sinead and Ciara Maguire, who both have Cystinosis, are currently in training for their three plus marathons over three days. They will be joined along the route by supporters and other walkers, who will do small parts of the endurance challenge with them to help buoy their spirits. In addition, a larger group will accompany them on the last day to walk the final leg, by which time the original six will probably be on their "last legs"!
At the finish, they will all be warmly welcomed at a Family Fun Day being held in and around The Red Lion pub, Preston, Hertfordshire. There will be stalls, competitions, quizzes and a barbeque over the day. Later that evening there will be live music and Ray & Jo Lambe’s speciality – the Hog Roast. Everyone involved in the Fun Day are freely donating their time, products and services so that ALL proceeds from this event will also be added to the sponsorship total.
In doing so they hope to raise awareness of Cystinosis but also raise sponsorship which will go directly to Cystinosis research. This is the fourth year this group have organised an event, with this being by far the most ambitious. To date they have raised approximately £25,000.
They will be following the middle portion of the Grand Union Canal Run route, starting around the 10 mile marker, travelling on to Fenny Stratford just south of Milton Keynes by the end of day 2, then finally day 3 will see them go east, leave the canal and head across country to finish at The Red Lion. You can check out the route at www.gucr.co.uk.
So come on, get your trainers on and join them on the way or even just come out to cheer them on. And if you know any businesses en route who would like to sponsor them or could offer discounted accommodation for nights 1 and 2 please contact Sue Maguire at mail@cystinosis.ie.

The Red Lion is a 200-year-old Georgian building and, as a free house, is a great real ale pub.
The Red Lion is also well known because, in October 1982, it became the first community-owned public house in Great Britain. Read the story of this venture as well as further information on awards won by The Red Lion and the contribution it makes to village life.
