An extraordinary $225,000 (£150,000) was raised by a fundraising golf tournament held in California, USA, last month.
On 10th November, 144 golfers gathered at the Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club in Orange County for the second annual Fore A Cure, Natalie’s Wish benefit, raising money for the Cystinosis Research Foundation through auctions, donations and individual and corporate sponsorships.
The Cystinosis Research Foundation, a California-based charity, has funded 45 studies and fellowships across the globe in the last five years, totalling more than $6.9m (£4.6m) in total.
The event was also aiming to educate and increase awareness about the rare metabolic disorder.
Such a large sum is hugely welcome for the funding of research into cystinosis, its treatment and cure. Due to the rarity of the disease (just 150 in the UK and Eire, and 2,000 estimated worldwide), research funds are limited.
